About this Event

As April showers give way to May flowers, let your creativity bloom with Special Collections!

Floriography, more commonly known as the language of flowers, is a means of symbolic communication through the use or arrangement of flowers. Throughout history, gifts of blooms, plants and specific floral arrangements have been used to send a coded message to the recipient, allowing the sender to express feelings which could not be spoken aloud in society.

This hands-on workshop will start with a brief history of the language of flowers told through botanical illustrations, scrapbooks and other materials from Special Collections. Then, attendees will spend the remaining time crafting a floral collage or zine to convey a sentiment or communicate a secret message using the language of flowers.

This in-person workshop is open to UD students, faculty and staff. Registration is required as seating is limited. The workshop will not be recorded.

This event is supported by generous funding from the Friends of the UD Library.
