About this Event
Join UD philosophy professors Thomas Powers and Mark Greene to examine the ethics of generative artificial intelligence.
Powers, who specializes in the ethics of emerging technologies, will speak on “Rethinking Research Ethics in the Age of Generative AI.” Focusing particularly on Large Language Models (LLMs), Powers will discuss ethical and conceptual issues in the context of research misconduct – data fabrication, falsification and plagiarism – and examine how the traditional definitions and guidelines of this misconduct become problematic when generative algorithms are involved in producing both course-required and scholarly content.
Greene will present on “Learning Before Teaching: Against AI Old Fartism,” and speak to the fact that students who learn to use all available resources effectively, including AI, will be at a big advantage. It is the duty of teachers, then, to support students in that process and expanding their learning tools -- not limit them to those that happened to be available “back in my day” for teachers.
This is a hybrid event. Registration is required. When registering, please denote whether you plan to attend virtually or in person.
This event is part of the AI-focused seminar series called “Navigating the Future of AI and Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.” For more information and to stay informed about upcoming seminars, visit the AI for Teaching and Learning website.
