About this Event
Who gets to read—and who is denied that right?
Across the United States, prisons restrict or ban access to thousands of books. These decisions often target works about race, social justice, history or even basic education, limiting opportunities for learning, growth and rehabilitation. Book bans in prisons don’t just affect incarcerated people—they raise urgent questions about equity, access, and freedom of expression for everyone.
Stop by our table to:
- Learn about the history and impact of prison book bans
- Discover why these bans matter for all of us, not just those behind bars
- Explore how communities and organizations are fighting back
- Find out what you can do to support the right to read for all people
Presented in partnership with the UD Department of English, this event is part of our campus-wide Banned Books Week programming, which celebrates the freedom to read and raises awareness about the dangers of censorship.
Don’t miss the highlight of the week: the Banned Books Read-Out on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, where students, faculty, staff and the community bring banned and challenged works to life.
